Does the Audience Deserve This???

Did Mark Twain give us the ending we truly deserved? Majority of you reading this probably does not think so. But let me ask you this question, is the audience entitled to say what they think they do and do not deserve? Mark Twain, a satirical genius, does not owe us anything. In MMMYYYYY opinion, I do not believe the ending of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, deserves all the criticism it received. Everyone claims the ending was “anticlimactic” and “a waste of a read”, but what did you really expect? After all, the very first paragraph warns the audience to not look for a motive, plot, or rhyme or reason with anything that happens. That would include the ending. Many readers, including myself, were expecting an ending that consisted of Huck and Tom having this epiphany moment and finally doing the right thing and setting Jim free. That is what made the ending so unpredictable and exciting! No one expected Tom to come out with the news “oh by the way, you were already free Jim and it was  unnecessary to have you do all these tasks, butttttt at least you proved yourself worthy!!! Haha surprise??” Yeah no. Totally caught us off guard, HOWEVER, this pushes this satirical effect of the nonexistent plot. The ending that no one believes they deserved, matches the ironic mayhem that has developed throughout Huck and Jim’s adventures. Overall the ending shocked and upset millions of readers, but you can’t say Mark Twain did not warn us!

Rules, Shmules

We are told since birth, "Do not touch that," "Do not touch this," "Do this instead of that," "Stop doing that," and it is frankly quite tiring. Families reinforce rules at different levels however. One families "You must go to church every week," may be another families, "Stop going to church and listening to that bullcrap." Huck is surrounded by rules to the fact he feels he can not be himself. Everyone around him tries to tell him which set of rules to follow it becomes overwhelming for him and he just wants to live how he wants to live. The question becomes, how important are rules and to which extent should we always follow them? Can rules harm? DO rules interfere with one's development and individuality? In the case where specific rules force one to think a certain way or believe a certain thing, it can be argued yes, rules have the capability to change ones individuality. In the case of Huckleberry Finn, his individuality is often challenged by the widow and Miss Watson as they continuously try to tell Huck what he should and should not do at all times. Their number one goal was to "sivilize [him]," (Twain, 11) by telling him to "...set up straight,...don't gap and stretch like that," (Twain, 12). All Huck wanted to do, was be free, and be himself. Yes rules create uniformity and safety in some cases, but not all the time and should be recognized as such. In the end, parents should be careful when it comes to creating rules for their children to follow and keeping in mind the greater good of the rules and if it has the potential of creating a robot kid who is just going by what they say.

Insight to Peer Pressure from Grace Nurse

peer pressure. pEEr preSSure. Our parents have warned us from the beginning the dangers of peer pressure. But no one wants to listen right? Until they experience it themselves. My parents however, failed to mention it could to lead to certain people getting hanged? Maybe? Well lets go back to the beginning. I am Grace Nurse, Rebecca Nurse's favorite and only daughter. It started with the prettiest girl in Salem: Abigail. "Lets all lie," she said. "It'll be fun!" she said. Of course with the POWER of peer pressure, I did not fully evaluate the possibilities of lying to the contempt of court and accusing innocent people of something as wild as witchcraft. I know I know what you're all thinking, how could you NOT think of those things?? I'm telling you its all in peer pressure, its like you are brain washed. I mean that is basically what Abigail has done to me and like 15 other girls. She is a manipulative, “woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!,” (pg. 140, line 148-149). Oh my goodness it all makes sense now! Because she is so pretty, and Reverend Parris' niece, she automatically has this power and authority over us. Anything she says goes. *moment of epiphany* “I never knew the lying lessons I was taught,” by Abigail could be so strong (pg. 146, line 467-468). Peer pressure has ultimately taken over the once pure city of Salem. Everyone still had their sanity, believed in God and his purpose, everyone has gone just mad now. And I guess I am part of the reason why this city is burning in hysteria. I guess it is too late now. Whats done is done. But we all have little Miss Abigail to blame. If she wasn't so powerful and substantially better than the rest of us, then she could not have so easily influenced us into claiming witchcraft upon so many people. So if you are one of those people who have been accused, I am sorry.

How Important is Religion?

To certain individuals, religion is what they base most or all of their life descisons around. Others just do whatever feels right. But the question becomes, in America today, how relevant is religion actually? Overtime have we become a more religious based society, or have we evolved from it? In the Puritan age, God was their only focus. Their, "hope and treasure [lied] above," (Bradstreet, line 54). Which basically means they all knew they had a home in heaven with God, because they devoted their lives to Him. Today we still have the concept of heaven and hell regardless of your preferred religion. Families are a determining factor to how religious you may be. If the family you are born into goes to church every Sunday, and praises God on a regular basis, you are most likely to adapt and follow those same traditions. And vise verse of course. If I do say so myself, America evolved to being less religious and devoted to just one God, but to adapting many, many other cultures. To me that is pretty darn cool. However, religion is still a touchy topic to discuss at times depending on your viewpoints. What's religion like in your household and is it a main focus to your family????. Columbus Discovered What????

Why does America have this really bad habit of celebrating the wrong people and the wrong things???? Do any of you even know what Columbus Day is about? No we are not celebrating a white man who discovered America. It is not a glorious day. Christopher Columbus was a man of hate, was apart of ripping the Native American's land from them, and carried no guilt. They were "just Indians being Indians" not bothering a single soul (108). The textbooks teach us, "in 1942, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue," but what they aren't teaching us the awful things he did. America often brushes our dirty past under the rug while praising the wrong things. Not enough awareness is brought to Native Americans today and it's upsetting. As a minority myself, I understand the "punishment" they are experiencing (106). I believe we should not put Christopher on a high horse and instead we should kick him off. I say we celebrate not just Native Americans, but all the minirities mistreated on Indigenous People Day, who's with me???? Ooooohhhyeeaaaaa😎
